Local school children scoop prizes in colouring competition
Four local schoolchildren have been recognised for their artistic talent and creativity in re-imagining some of Brighton’s most iconic buildings.
A recent colouring competition, organised by the developers of Edward Street Quarter, encouraged pupils at Carlton Hill Primary School to flex their artistic chops and interpret the cityscape in their favourite art medium.
The competition’s newly launched digital colouring book, Colour it Bright, features eight illustrations of the city’s stand-out architecture to help spread some cheer and to keep small hands occupied.
The winner of the competition, Hannah, age 10, submitted a groovy and vibrant redesign of The Royal Pavilion using coloured pencils and beautifully bended magic markers – which won her the top prize of a £35 book voucher. Hannah's picture is above.
The judge of the competition, Emma Reeves from Tarner’s Trust for Developing Communities, said,

The judge of the competition, Emma Reeves from Tarner’s Trust for Developing Communities, said,
“This winning design included an interesting use of negative space around the first floor of the Indo-gothic building, giving the impression that the onion domes above are floating away like brightly-painted hot air balloons.”
The three runners up, Christopher, age 11, Maddie, age 9, and Ursula, age 8, submitted fantastical drawings of the Brighton Palace Pier, The Grand Hotel and the Brighton Dome, respectively and each were awarded a £10 book voucher for their dazzling creativity.
“It was such a delight to get a chance to see such colourful pictures of our iconic buildings. As a judge it was a difficult decision to make as all 13 of the entries were absolutely wonderful!”
Liam Ronan-Chlond, Stakeholder & External Relations for First Base, developers of Edward Street Quarter, said:
“We were delighted with the response to the colouring competition – it’s so fun for us to see the city through the eyes of a child. We have plenty more community art projects planned for the Edward Street Quarter neighbourhood – so watch this space if you’d like to get involved.”
Maurice Lehy, Deputy Headteacher, Carlton Hill Primary School, commented:
“Our pupils were very excited by the iconic buildings colouring pack that Edward Street Quarter put together. As a school, we are always looking to make links to our local area and our pupils were just as enthusiastic - especially with prizes up for grabs!”
Chris, Year 6, said:
"I loved choosing new colours for buildings I've seen - it was amazing and creative. We would love to do more work that links art projects to our local area - Brighton has so much to offer!”
